My Heart Belongs to Clear Lake

Craft ShowThey say that “home is where the heart is”. Well twenty-eight years ago we realized our hearts belonged to Clear Lake. Life had thrown us one of those “curve balls” and there was an unexpected job change. My hubby was in a large city being interviewed for a job and was asked, “ are you sure you want to bring your three young daughters here?” We realized the answer was “no” and that everything we’d always wanted was right here in Clear Lake, Iowa.

Being raised in a larger city, I always loved the times spent visiting grandparents in their small hometowns. What I grew to understand was that I loved the sense of community, of caring and of pride that could be found in a town like ours. I remember once someone indicating that things were just not the same with all of the tourists around. I thought to myself, “you’re right – it’s even better” and felt happy that I chose to embrace the beauty, diversity and excitement brought into our community from people throughout the world. I’m thrilled when tourists come to town!

Chasing the WavesI love the energy of Clear Lake and the variety of things for both “townies” and tourists to do. I truly believe that without our amazing Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and the vision of the City of Clear Lake; our community would not provide the enrichment our family has been fortunate to experience. There are many amazing natural attractions in our community – our 3,684 acre lake; numerous nature areas and camping spots and a host of other places to visit and explore. But the tourist and the community this has become is what fills me with excitement.

Lady of the Lake by Jessica Lynn HannaMy daughter said “Mom, I grew up in a ‘Normal Rockwell’ town”. As I reflect on it I know she’s right.

In Clear Lake, Iowa there is something to do from sun up to sun down and late into the evening. Whether a person’s taste is the quiet and stillness of the the water lapping against the side of the boat while fishing; or the roar and excitement of a boat skimming swiftly over the lake; there’s something for everyone and every season. Theater, concerts in the park or at the Historic Surf Ballroom, guided fishing excursions, yoga on the beach, cycling, sailing, festivals, Farmer’s Market and more – Clear Lake is ready to explore!

Tiptoe Through the Tulips

It wasn’t all that long ago that Mother Nature stopped by to remind us of her power, grace and beauty.  The week had been unseasonably warm and robins could be heard in the early morning sharing their joyful song.  The world was waking up from its long slumber – the grass just beginning to turn to the lush green that I love.  The tulip leaves had fought their way to the surface; strong, tallTulips in Snow and proud.  And then it happened.  Just when we thought we were in the clear, the final one-two punch arrived and served up a 2″ mess of ice, slush, snow and weather that we all hoped was past.

According to folklore,  robins must see snow on their tail 3 times before spring arrives. Based on that revelation, spring was just around the corner with the next morning’s quick snow-melt giving us hope.   I so hoped the tulips would be OK so that I could enjoy their splendor.   Their bright and inviting colors boast of a strength and beauty that is cause for celebration. And celebrate they do in Pella, Iowa!  Tulips in bloomFor 80 years, this town has rolled out its welcome mat, swept the streets and celebrated their Dutch heritage with dancing, costumes, parades, performances, a market and more that will, according to its website, take you back in time to a “European village full of windmills, tulips and excitement” ! Couple that with the sound of wooden shoes and you will be transported to “the Netherlands in the Midwest”.  This year’s Tulip Time will be held May 7-9, 2015 and is sure to be just as colorful and exciting as the rest!

I can’t wait!  Growing up in Iowa you’d think I’d have gone to the Tulip Festival Single Tulipbut I haven’t.  Don’t ask me why – I’m clueless.  In fact, there are a lot of great festivals and celebrations throughout Iowa that could easily fill our time every weekend.  What’s wonderful is that I get to go this year!  I’ll be laying aside the worries of traveling on my own and navigating the masses; and get to meet and make new friends in a fun and comfortable environment.  Rhonda True of MC True Travels kindly extended the invitation to join her and others on a motor coach tour in celebration of the fine event.  We’ll be visiting the Historical Village and doing the Windmill Tour and will have plenty of time to do two additional events at minimal cost. These may include:

  • Pella City Tour with guide
  • The Scholte House Museum
  • Golf Cart Shuttle
  • The Quilt Show with over 100 quilts displayed

Other activities available include Fire House Museum, Pella Depot Museum, Veteran’s Museum, Dutch Demos & Crafts, Flower Show, Antique Auto & Implement Display, Opera House Tour with Organ Demos and more!

I’ve always wanted to go to Europe and can only imagine that as I tiptoe through Tiptoe thru the Tulipsthe tulips in Pella, it will be as if I’ve been transported to another space and time…all without leaving Iowa!  Now how fun is that?!!  Exploring another culture, tasting the cuisine, hearing the music – all of the sights, sounds and smells that make for a great adventure!  Thanks, Rhona True for inviting me aboard!
